How forklift certification actually works

Three parts. Only the first one fits on a phone.

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1910.178(l) asks every employer to train and evaluate each operator, then certify it. Online-only courses cover part one. Forklift Drill covers part one and gives your employer the paperwork for part three.

1

You, with Forklift Drill

Your employer, with our checklist

Evaluation and certification

A qualified person watches you work and signs the evaluation. The employer certifies you with your name, the training and evaluation dates, and who did them.

Every three years, at least. Each operator is re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is also required after unsafe operation, an accident or near miss, a poor evaluation, a different type of truck, or a change at the workplace.

Straight answers

Before you buy any forklift course.

Is this an OSHA certification or a forklift license?

No. OSHA does not issue forklift licenses, cards or certificates, and it does not approve training providers. Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), your employer trains you, evaluates you at the workplace and certifies you. Forklift Drill helps with the classroom part and with the employer's evaluation and certification records.

Can I get forklift certified completely online?

Not under the OSHA rule. Formal instruction can be online, but practical training and a hands-on evaluation must happen with the truck you will use, at your workplace. Be careful with sites that promise a license or certificate in an hour.

Who signs the certificate?

Your employer certifies that you were trained and evaluated. The certification must include your name, the date of training, the date of evaluation, and who did the training or evaluation.

How often do I need to be re-evaluated?

At least once every three years. Refresher training and a new evaluation are also required after unsafe operation, an accident or near miss, a poor evaluation, assignment to a different type of truck, or a workplace change that affects safe operation.

Does it cover my type of truck?

The lessons cover the topics the rule lists for all powered industrial trucks. The details of your exact truck, attachments and site come from your trainer and the manufacturer's manual, and the evaluation is done on that truck.
